Over the years, I have seen numerous limited company directors who have experienced subpar customer service from their accountant. Similarly, I have encountered numerous corporate directors who received superb customer service but were had to pay a fortune for it. However, I have only encountered a small number of directors who were able to get both, that is, exceptional customer service at a reasonable cost.
Essentially, company directors have a tendency to be ignorant of the fact that a limited company is a distinct legal entity from themselves as individuals. The director will seek a quote from an accountant for the preparation of the limited company's accounts and the related corporation tax return. If the accountant is overworked, the world will never know that the director will eventually need personal tax return services, at least not until it is too late. By "too late," I mean that the director will eventually realise that he has been receiving dividends from the company that must be reported to the inland revenue, which will probably result in him receiving a fine for failing to notify the revenue in a timely manner that he needs to prepare a top accountants in London. Any limited business director will typically need help with payroll, yearly accounts, the annual return, a corporation tax return, and personal tax returns. Therefore, I would encourage that person to check that any accounting and taxes package they agree to contains all of the aforementioned items.
The internet is typically the first place you look if you need to hire an accountant. At this stage, you shouldn't be scared to look everywhere in the UK until you find the package that's appropriate for you. Local high street accountants, in my opinion, are lumbering inefficient dinosaurs that just charge too much for pretty simple tasks that should be of no difficulty to a skilled expert. The production of accounts used to need a lot of manual interaction, but with today's integrated computer packages, the entire process is rather easy from beginning to end. You shouldn't have any issues as long as you don't mind communicating with your professional over email rather than actually sitting down face to face. However, I would strongly advise you to look for any unfavourable remarks on forums and accounting review websites, as well as to request references. The decision is ultimately up to you, so be ready for any errors you may make.
