Have you found the perfect item for baking? If the answer is "yes," the next ingredient for a successful home bakery is customers. Where do you find customers?
Think About The People You Know.
Think about where they usually go and what they do. Who do you meet when you walk around: family, friends, hairdressers, social clubs, women's clubs, church families, nurses, realtors, doctors, librarians, insurance agents, midwives, neighbors, former co-workers, spouse's co-workers, etc.? They'll be thrilled to have found someone who offers them a great product at a low price while making it convenient. And speaking of fresh, you can't buy anything this fresh anywhere else!
How Do You Present Your Products?
Have samples ready to showcase your new bakery to others. Tell them you're starting a new home bakery and want their feedback on your new products. If you're not sure you just want to bring it into the business, ask them if they want to see it. Be prepared to tell them how often you will be baking (once a week, only on holidays, every Friday, made-to-order, etc.) and how far in advance they will need to order. The most effective way to sell is to let people see, smell and taste what you want to sell.
If you do this, ask them to let you bake. Many people will agree. You should immediately set your own boundaries and level of baking.
Another way to attract customers is to offer cakes as gifts for thank-you's, birthdays, etc. Soon, everyone will know that you bake cakes.
When it's your turn to bring treats for the Sunday morning coffee break or women's meeting, bring only the best. Everyone will want to know where you bought your candy. Tell them you made and sold them at the bakery. They will probably ask you themselves, without you having to tell them. If they need something specific, tell them you'll be happy to do it for them.
You may also want to sell your items at a local flea market. Find out what the rules of the flea market are, as some are prohibited. The rules change, so check every few months to see if you are currently banned. Selling at flea markets can be very profitable. If you do it and want to attract more customers, do it regularly, for example on the first Saturday of the month or every Saturday. They will look for you immediately. Be prepared to be asked to carry a card with your contact information. It's a good idea to offer individual items for flea markets and craft fairs, in addition to your regular products. Recently, my 11-year-old daughter made a large batch of 6-inch chocolate cookies for a party. They were unadorned and packaged in a plain storage bag; she sold them all in an hour.
With the ideas in this book, you'll soon be able to buy plenty of tasty products.
